Sankofa Drummers and Dancers

Sankofa is a Dover-based Company with a primary focus on African Dance and African Percussion classes for youth of the community. Founded in 1994 by Councilman Reuben Salters, Sankofa is designed to teach basic percussion instrumentation, rhythms and pieces from various African Nations. Sankofa dancers also learn the history of the dance pieces and are exposed to a variety of dancing styles. Professional teachers from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. are contracted to provide the best instructions for our members.

Sankofa is open to youth eight to 18 years old. Youth must be in school or college. There are no race or gender biases. All youth of the community are welcome to join Sankofa.

Practice hours are:
Wednesday Evening 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Saturday Morning 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM

Other activities of Sankofa African Dance and Drum company are:
  • Classes in Kiswahili. Kiswahili is spoken in East and Central Africa.

  • Students are also exposed to spoken French.

  • African and African American History

  • Sankofa African Dance and Drum Company performs 25-30 times each year. Some performances are in Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Membership dues are $10.00 per month. Studio Location: 56 S. Kirkwood Street, Dover, DE.
